Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries

Iran with an average rainfall of 245 mm per year is considered as part of the semi-arid world, and the importance of proper conservation and utilization of freshwater resources is becoming increasingly important. Currently, due to the widespread use of freshwater resources In industry, agriculture, health, and drinking, different sectors of the user are urged to put optimum use of these resources on their agenda. The breeding industry in the interior of the country is one of the most important consumers of freshwater. Therefore, efforts have been focused on research into reducing fresh water consumption. One of the strategies to reduce the pressure on freshwater resources, especially in dehydrated areas such as Iran, is more use than sea and saltwater resources.

At present, the amount of aquaculture production is about 150 million tons per year, of which almost half is fed by sea fishing and half is aquaculture. In order to reduce freshwater consumption, the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) also emphasizes the importance of marine fish production due to the importance of fresh water supplies.

The existence of unlimited beaches on the northern margin of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman with a length of more than 2000 km of coastline provides a suitable condition for the use of marine resources for our country. Among these, the Bushehr province has more than 700 bluefinches along the Gulf Fars and access to this sea has a privileged position in the field of marine and fishery science.
